Aoba Shogi Dojo

On Saturday, November 5, I went to the opening ceremony of the new Yokohama Shogi dojo named Aoba. This dojo is run by the professional Shogi player Moriuchi Toshiyuki. The day of the opening was attended by Moriuchi in addition to the player Kagawa Manao who offered a session of simultaneous games in which I had the opportunity to participate.

Until now this dojo was only used for the classes for children offered by the former member of the Shoureikai Suzuki Hajime but from November will be open every Saturday to anyone who wants to go.

The dojo has three floors. The ground floor had room to play games, the second has more tables in which can fit up to 9 boards and a room with lots of shogi books, including some written in English such as the classic Trevor Legget, Shogi Japan’s Game of Strategy. On the third floor, there is a small room that is ready for any player to make simultaneous ones. In the dojo, all the seats are with a zabuton on the floor. The zabuton is a cushion to sit on the floor with crossed legs or the traditional Japanese seiza.

Before the game, I was able to take a picture of memory with the player Kagawa.

The game started at 13:30. Before starting a game against a professional player this gives you the option to play with a little advantage, you can ask to start the game with fewer pieces, this handicap is used to match matches against stronger opponents. Personally, as I have no experience playing with any type of handicap so whenever I face a professional I do without this extra help.

After a complicated opening, I got the advantage in the middle game and gradually have the decisive advantage and won the match.

When I finished, I went down to the second floor where I could play with other shogi fans. The first two games I lost but I managed to recover myself by winning the next 3. The atmosphere at the dojo loved it, there are people of very different levels and it is easy to meet people.
